So our journey to Olympos started friday morning when Tom, Maria and I went to the local grocery store to purchase supplies for our trip. We got our groceries and rented a taxi to take us back. The driver took us part of the way back to the Farm School when he suddenly realized that he had approached a one-way street. "Its ok," he told Maria, "I am just going to drive backwards for a little while." I watched out the back window as we drove down a three lane highway in reverse. Cars were pulling into the middle lane and staring at us as we backed our way to the exit. I thought we were going to die without even seeing Olympos. The driver however had a different attitude. "There are alot of trucks out today," he tolds Maria, in the calmest voice imaginable. After much angry (or perhaps "astonished") hornblowing and near collisions, we finally made it back to the Farm School. One leg of our adventure complete. Unfortunately it was the easiest leg of our adventure. The next portion of our journey involved renting a car. That was an adventure as well, traveling to the inside of the city to the dealership which was basically a small shop with many vehicles parked on the sidewalk infront of the building. Those vehicles were the rentals. We met the guy inside and Tom and one of the Greek college students, Olga, talked to him about renting a nine person mini-bus. When I say "mini-bus", I really mean the European version of "mini-bus" which is basically a Ford Taurus with an extra row of seats instead of a trunk. The guy at the rental shop asks Tom, "Are you comfortable driving a stick? Because American cars are automatic." This came as news to all of us, especially Tom who simply responded, "Yeah, I own a stickshift." This comment garnered Tom a mini stare-down until finally the rental guy said "Have you ever driven a French car?" I wondered secretly what that question meant, perhaps the car smelled like old cheese and a giant white flag popped out of the hood at the first sign of danger, but the rental car guy proceeded to explain to Tom that the main difference was the location of the horn. If you have never driven a French car, then I won't ruin the surprise by disclosing any information here on this website. You'll just have to find out for yourself. After we filled the car, we were on our way to Olympos, Mats playing guitar because the radio only offered two stations, techno and techno. We went without any idea where we would sleep. And so when we got there thus began the mad scramble over the precious car seats. Five of us slept in the car while three intrepid souls slept out in tents. Maybe someday hunters will find those three poor unfortunates. Just kidding, I figure they actually got more sleep than the rest of us in the "mini-bus". The next morning came, cold and early, as most mornings spent on a mountain in a French car tend to be. But the view was SPECTACULAR. And that was only at 1100 meters. So I rubbed a generous amount of Carmex on my nipples for chafing, hoisted my load, pulled up my soccer socks, and set out up the mountain. It was one of the most strenuous achievements I have ever attempted. My legs won't let me forget this for days. After what seemed like an eternity of climbing, I passed a Greek man who pointed up toward the sky, "In one hour we'll be there," he said, "and we can relax at the shelter for the next part of the climb." "Dear God," I thought, looking toward the tiny glint far off in the mountain, "what does he mean by next part?" The hike to the shelter was excrutiating. It is so steep up Olympos, I have never hiked anything like it. It flattens out for maybe a total of 25 yards at various points but the remainder of the trail is a complete ascent. The shelter was at 2100 meters (about 6900 feet). That meant the summit was another 819 meters (2700 feet) above sea level. I made past the tree line, to about 2500 meters (8000 feet) and had to quit. My legs could take no more. I was proud of how far I went, though. Maybe next time I'll reach the summit and bring back fire for humanity.
Today the school had a pig roast for donors. It was fun. I helped turn a pig on a spit for which I was rewarded with delicious pork. And oh how it was delicious. These Greeks know alot about meat. And so that is it for now. I'm exhausted.

OK, so I haven't posted for a while. I am trying to remember some of the stuff that has happened in the previous few weeks. The pictures up featuring the ceramics are from the ceramics fair in Thessaloniki on the 15th. We had alot of fun with the students. The fair was interesting and I learned that the former president of the farm school's daughter teaches ceramics here in October, so hopefully I will be able to make some traditional Greek ceramics soon. The real enjoyment of the night came, however, when we went to a concert of traditional Greek music at the fair. I heard the bazookia, the baglamas and of course an accordian. Several students started dancing and the Greek enthusiasm being contagious as it is, I soon joined them. For centuries, the Greeks have used dancing as a way of celebrating and mourning, an expression of their individuality and uniquesness even when under the rule of barbarian nations and in just a few minutes, I obliterated it all with my dancing. Apparantly, the Greeks aren't very impressed by "the robot". The next day we went to an amusement park called "Magic Park" although the only magic I experienced was not vomiting my gyro on some of the rides. The following tuesday, I drank my first glass of ouzo. Wednesday night we went to another concert, this time it was Greek pop superstars! The next day was mountian day, featured in my pictures. It was alot of fun. We taught some of the kids "the stupid American" game of ultimate frisbee. Then we had a teachers versus senior student soccer match. The students took the early lead with two goals scored in the first fifteen minutes. But their propensity toward frappe and cigarettes showed wehn we finally won 6-2. One of those six points was scored by me on a beautiful assist by my fellow expatriat and hero of the match with 5 goals, Tom. Then we had some lunch and afterwards, games and festivities. We played sack races and egg toss and had an intern versus students tug of war which was lost miserably by us. Vengeance for the soccer match. Finally the seniors tied the underclassmen and teachers to the tree. I have no idea why, maybe to bring the sadist out in the older students. If I remember high school correctly, older students do have that particular inclination. Friday, the residents of the school, staff and faculty who live on campus, had a dinner on campus. I was invited! I found out later that I was invited mainly to help set-up and clean up but, whatever, they had some sweet souvlakia. Oh, delicious meat on a stick, I don't know whose idea it was but God bless your genius mind. I was invited at the dinner to sit with the Lansdales, the ex-president of the school and his wife, who also happen to be legends in the area and friends of many European heads of state and dignitaries. Also at the table was the current President of the school, Dr. McGrew. I felt a little out of place but deeply honored and impressed by the Lansdales humble diplomacy and warmth. I had a wonderful time at the dinner and after cleaning up when I got to hang out with many of the local college students. The weekend and most of next week until friday was spent with on campus, hanging out with students and teaching class and various other duties. Normal days. So that catches me up mostly with everything exciting that has happened up until the 29th when we left to hike Olympos.

The "Lost and Found" Generation

Well, it has been over a week since I arrived here in Thessaloniki. The place is wonderful. I was picked up at the airport by the Head of Students at the farm school, Thanos Kassapides, who was quick to show me his Berea College bumper sticker on the rear window of his '91 Toyota. It has been there since he bought the car, I suspect thermally bonded onto the glass the same way that my disdain for Berea has been etched onto my soul, but I did not tell him this. I was tired from the three connecting flights and perturbed by the fact that Lufthansa had lost my bags but a few minutes with Thanos talking, his energy like that of a pixie on crystal meth, changed my mood. Greece is a beautiful country.
On the way to the Farm School, Thanos tells me of the history of the area although I confess much of this primal information he was providing has been given up due to my jet lag. I do remember, however, him telling me as soon as we arrived that there was no food and there would be no food at the school until the students arrived almost a week later. "Also," he continued, "the hot water is difficult to turn on, so I apologize but you will have to take cold showers until the students get here." Before I could answer he told me to have a nice night and he would see me in the morning (it was 4:30 in the afternoon). Also, could I possibly greet at the gate the other two American guys who would be here at 5 and could I show them around the school? I gave him a blank smile and thought to myself, "what have I gotten myself into?"
Luckily a few minutes later I was greeted (substitute "greeted" for "alarmed by a man standing at my window") by Kyriakos, the Greek Joe Pesci (Goodfellas-Joe Pesci, not Lethal Weapon-Joe Pesci). He had come to get me and told me a little about the school on the way to greet my compatriots, Mats and Tom. It is a few minutes before 5 but we could tell the guys were already there before we reached the gate. The warm, sweet smell of body odor alerted us to their presence. We reached the gate and introduced ourselves and then Mats and Tom inform us that they have ridden bikes to get here. From Denmark. The Denmark. Apparantly they have spent the last two months bicycling across the entire continent (read more about this wonderful Odyssey at freewheelin-tm.blogspot.com). I'm impressed by these two scruffy, smelly men and needless to say slightly jealous. Nonetheless (or perhaps, in fact of this) I realized that we were instant friends. Kyriakos informed the guys that there was no food. They asked Kyriakos to take us to the nearest grocery store. "Yes. Of course. But you really need to take a shower first."
The next day I awoke like a child at Christmas hoping that the airline had delivered my bags to the school but alas, like the poor child in a Jehovah's Witness family, I had only my sweaty rags to comfort me. We met with Thanos that morning and he was quick to defend the lack of windows in his office. He has improvised by placing a fan inside his office and one outside the door to blow in the fresh breeze of the Aegean. "On a clear day," he told us, "you can see Mt. Olympos from the front of this building." Indeed you can. But only on a clear day. Which is basically every day :).
Later that day, we met Maria, a very pretty half-Greek American who will be our female counterpart here at the school. She speaks Greek, studied Italian, and can be a total ditz sometimes. She fits in perfectly.

A lack of food, hot water, and clean clothes, surrounded by libidinous teenagers and stranded in a foreign country with a foreign alphabet has a tendency to bond one another together. And school has started so we are busy all the time which is the reason I haven't written earlier. But anyway I have exhausted anything interesting to say. We went to the beach at Chalkidiki on Saturday. I play alot of basketball, eat alot of peaches, and drink alot of fresh milk for which my intestines are constantly reminding me that I am unaccustomed. And the soccer field opens in a week. It is beautiful Jesse, let me tell you in case you read this. It is constantly touched by the soft breeze off the Aegean and you can see Olympos from the field. The sun is never in the keeper's eyes. If Jesus were a striker, I think this is where He'd choose to play. And so, with that being said, and the half-liter of milk I drank for breakfast calling, I will bid you all a fond chareite.

In it, I attempted to represent the time you babysat Matthew and me and forced us to eat "rat penis stew" (which was really cut up hotdogs in tomato soup). We both cried and threatened to tell on you; the trauma of that moment has carried on as I can never look at another rat penis without feeling nauseous. We were such trailer trash! My dear son,
I am appalled, even horrified, that you have adopted Classics as a Major. As a matter of fact, I almost puked on the way home today. I suppose that I am old fashioned enough to believe that the purpose of an education is to enable one to develop a community of interest with his fellow men, to learn to know them, and to learn how to get along with them. In order to do this, of course, he must learn what motivates them, and how to impel them to be pleased with his objectives and desires.
I am a practical man, and for the life of me I cannot possibly understand why you should wish to speak Greek. With whom will you communicate in Greek? I have read, in recent years, the deliberations of Plato and Aristotle, and was interested to learn that the old bastards had minds which worked very similarly to the way our minds work today. I was amazed that they had so much time for deliberating and thinking, and was interested in the kind of civilization that would permit such useless deliberation. Then I got to thinking that it wasn't so amazing after all, they thought like we did, because my Hereford cows today are very similar to those ten or twenty generations ago. I am amazed that you would adopt Plato and Aristotle as a vocation for several months when it might make pleasant and enjoyable reading to you in your leisure time as relaxation at a later date. For the life of me, I cannot understand why you should be vitally interested in informing yourself about the influences of the Classics on English literature. It is not necessary for you to know how to make a gun in order to know how to use it. It would seem to me that it would be enough to learn English literature without going into what influence this, or that ancient mythology might have upon it. As for Greek literature, the history of the Roman and Greek churches, and the art of those eras, it would seem to me that you would be much better off by learning something about contemporary literature and writings, and things that might have some meaning to you with the people with whom you are to associate.
These subjects might give you a community of interest with an isolated few impractical dreamers, and a select group of college professors. God forbid!
It would seem to me that what you wish to do is to establish a community of interest with as many people as you possibly can. With people who are moving, who are doing things, and who have an interesting, not a decadent outlook.
I suppose everybody has to be a snob of some sort, and I suppose you will feel that you are distinguishing yourself from the herd by becoming a Classical snob. I can see you drifting into a bar, belting down a few, turning around to the guy on the stool next to you -- a contemporary billboard baron form Podunk, Iowa, and saying "Well, what do you think about old Leonidas?" Your friend, the billboard baron, will turn to you and say "Leonidas who?" You will turn to him and say, "Why Leonidas, the prominent Greek of the Twelfth Century." He will, in turn, say to you, "Well, who in the hell was he?" You will say, "Oh, you don't know about Leonidas?" and dismiss him, and not discuss anything else with him the rest of the evening. He will feel that he is a clodhopper from Podunk, Iowa. I suppose this will make you both happy, and as a result of it, you will wind up buying his billboard plant.
There is no question but this type of useless information will distinguish you, set you apart from the doers of the world. If I leave you enough money, you can retire to an ivory tower, and contemplate for the rest of your days the influence that the hieroglyphics of prehistoric man had upon the writings of William Faulkner. Incidentally, he was a contemporary of mine in Mississippi. We speak the same language -- whores, sluts, strong words, and strong deeds.
It isn't really important what I think. It's important what you wish to do with your life. I just wish I could feel that the influence of those oddball professors, and the ivory towers were developing you into the kind of a man we can both be proud of. I am quite sure that we both will be pleased and delighted when I introduce you to som friend of mine, and say, "This is my son. He speaks Greek."
I had dinner during the Christmas Holidays with an efficiency expert, an economic adviser to the nation of India, on the Board of Directors of Regents at Harvard University, who owns some eighty thousand acres of valuable timber land down here, among his other assets. His son and his family were visiting him. He introduced me to his son, and then apologetically said, "He is a theoretical mathematician. I don't even know what he is talking about. He lives in a different world." After a little while I got to talking to his son, and the only thing he would talk to me about was about his work. I didn't know what he was talking about either, so I left early.
If you are going to stay on at Brown, and be a professor of Classics, the courses you have adopted will suit you for a lifetime association with Gale Noyes. Perhaps he will even teach you to make jelly. In my opinion, it won't do much to help you learn to get along with people in this world. I think you are rapidly becoming a jackass, and the sooner you get out of that filthy atmosphere, the better it will suit me.
Oh, I know everybody says that a college education is a must. Well, I console myslef by saying that everybody said the world was square, except Columbus. You go ahead and go with the world, and I'll go it alone...
I hope I am right. You are in the hands of the Philistines, and dammit, I sent you there. I am sorry.

Dr. Carlevale passed this onto me the day I declared my major in Classics. Anytime I get depressed about the decision I made, I read this and remember that Ted Turner was once in the same boat I am now in.

As this new year approaches, it reminds me of times past. In particular, it reminds me of the last new years celebration. Oh what fun it was!

Uncle Earl showed us all his 'Great and Spectacular Magic Trick'. This is a snapshot of the 'big finish'.

My cousin, Carl, showed us a slide show presentation on his exciting trip to New Mexico. I've never seen a man so excited!

Uncle Robby gave Aunt Jack a nasty wake up call when (s)he passed out! HEHEHE! You should have seen him(er)when (s)he woke up!!!!

The party took an interesting trip when a Jonas of the Future came to warn us all of our doom if we don't soon change our ways and elect W as our lifelong leader. All he kept saying was "Four more years. Then four more. Then another four..." and stuff like that all night. I didn't know about him.

But things really got wild when the Gold Metal winning PaintBall Champion of the Olympics came by to say HI!!!! Personally, I don't like painball that much, but my Memaw loved it. She even got Mr E to sign her control top hose!

Now that I look at it, last year's celebration wasn't all that cool. I'll probably have more fun this year by working instead of partying. It'll be like my Christmas Eve and Christmas of this year too. Working. No fun. Just working while everyone else is having fun... I don't like holidays.

I am pretty sure that Harry's smooth calm voice will come on with "My Corey's Coming" next. Those songs make me miss you (not that I need to hear songs to miss you). Try not to think about things that have happened and just focus on having a great birthday. I love you and hope you have a very happy 28th Birthday! Be glad that it isn't number 30! That's old!

Christmas for the rest of us

Christmas Eve, we went to dinner with Mom Jan and Mom Becky. We all had a great time until Mom Becky said that her roast beef reminded her of a labia. That seemed to make everyone uncomfortable…

We went for a walk and sleeping on the street was an old homeless man who had nothing but this shabby old Christmas tree. I thought for a second about the warm beds and all the presents and friends and family and food we had at home. Even though we had all that material stuff, I realized that this old man who now slept so peacefully and content under his newspaper had something we didn’t: a Christmas tree. So I grabbed his and ran before he woke up.

A local Asheville vandal stole Baby Jesus out of a Nativity. I think News 13 WLOS reported the perpetrator’s name being a Mr. Greg Johns. The thief was pursued by a police officer resembling Neil Patrick Harris and a Jewish store owner (or maybe he was just acting Jewish to hide something). I hope this sends a little piece of home to you Jonas while you are so very far away.

I watched Dana History X last night with Bargo. Out of the thirty or so people that starred in it, about 4 actually graduated. Irony, that's my motivation. We did not let it stop there though. We watched the notorious Lucas Pepke video and topped the night off with Jonas' JGF video. I confess it made me a little nostalgic. It inspired me to resurrect asromafanclub. It also inspired me to write a new "poem". I entitle it "Berea Didn't Start The Fire"
